"I'm the only one that came home", mixed medium, 18"x 24"
A tribute to the paint horse that returned to the Arikara, or Rees, to the Fort Berthold reservation in ┬áNorth Dakota from Montana territory. The horse traveled over 600 miles wounded without his owner who was killed in the Battle of the Little Big Horn.
The bond that existed between the horse and its owner is so intimate and personal that it was revered as a spiritual partnership. This partnership is honored in the lyrics of the Arikara "Bears Trail Song' I'm the only one who came home".  Upon the horses return he was taken in and healed of its wounds, then honored where he took a place as "Medicine" and important part of many Arikara ceremonies.
